Photoshop features that every novice designer/illustrator should know
Color Balance is probably the most important part of Photoshop. People who want to work on existing images generally are using Photoshop for adjustments and filters. Color Balance is the place to go.
First of all, the safe thing to do is to create a mask layer for Color and Balance. Select the layer and choose New Layer dropdown in the Layers Panel. Choose Color & Balance.
As soon as the new mask layer is created, this adjustments in color balance window shows up. In that, you will find three different options for Shadows, Mid tones, Highlights and you can choose the color that you want to add to the layer.
This wont affect the actual image but will add another layer above the image. This way you can reverse the changes and discard if necessary.
This is another most important part of editing in Photoshop. The Photoshop features for blending could be accessed by right clicking on the necessary layer in the layers panel and choosing Blending options.
In the new window that appears, you will find all the possible blending options on the left side like Outer Glow, Inner Glow, color overlay, stroke and many more. Click on each and explore the options that would make dramatic changes in the images and use them wisely.
This is the tool that you would use if you want to edit a part of any image which doesn’t have a proper shape like the face of an image.

The Lasso tool is available in the toolbar. Click on the lasso tool and the submenu has three options lasso, polygonal and magnetic tools.
The following is an bad example of what you could do with Lasso Tool. Click on a point and circle back to the point to make a closed plane and then edit it later.
This is basically features that affect the very nature of the quality of the image under edit. Blurring, Noise, sharpening, and many more features could be found here. Also Liquify is one major feature that could change a lot about the image.
Adjustments is basically the area where we do the color balance. I just wanted to point these out if only you are using it for photo enhancements. These adjustments like brightness/exposure, levels, curves, exposure, vibrance, hue, black & white, inversion, posterization and many more features could be found here.
There are also many other features that you can learn but these would help you get started in Photoshop and have a taste of the designing.
